review 1: While poorly written, de Rosnay's Sarah's Key was at least a good story. The Other Story is not even a good story. The protagonist is an shallow unsympathetic male, and the deus ex machina ending that provides him with an opportunity for a heroic thought does nothing to redeem his character. All it does is give him fodder for his second novel, which he's been procrastinating through the whole novel, but this is not the other story that the reader wants. The reader wants the other story of his father, the backstory to his first novel. In addition, there's way too much gratuitous borderline-perverted sex. I've read two of de Rosnay's novels; I won't be reading a third.
review 2: Love this author! Never disappoints. I'm a sucker for a main character that's an ... moreauthor and a setting at a European resort. The author had a first novel that was runaway hit and became a huge movie. He is supposed to be working on next book and is at a resort to relax and start writing. He's with his young girlfriend after getting divorced, has some family drama, meets many interesting characters at the hotel. He's looking for a story for his new book and is not having much luck. Then, he gets some help.... less
