review 1: Ostensibly “chick lit” but really like nothing I’ve previously read in the genre. Set in Zimbabwe, this concerns single mother and hairdresser Vimbai, whose thunder is about to be stolen by her new colleague Dumisani, who is a wizard with the scissors, styling black and white customers alike with aplomb. However there is something about Dumi that Vimbai doesn’t know – and once she finds out, it changes everything. Set in a country where the economy is plummeting and people just about get by, this novel zips along with deceptively easy prose and you find that even if you don’t know what a Shona accent sounds like, you immediately recognise the cultural argy-bargy involved. Ending very slightly rushed but I really loved this novel and would recommend it. Its ligh... moretness is deceptive.
review 2: This book was recommended by a lady by the name of Ann Morgan, whose blog 'A year of reading around the world' captured some of the key literary pieces from each country around the world. The Hairdresser of Harare is a well written book. It is fast paced and deals with particular political issues that are rife in the Zimbabwe of today. The book excellently allows the reader to get immersed in the life of Vimbai with epic proportions. The only negative downside to the book was its predictability. Before I had even arrived at the first introduction at the Ncubes, I already felt I knew how this was going to end. Be that as it may, the writing is excellent and author should be commended on keeping readers hooked! less

Well written with a mix of post-colinial and modern Zimbabwean challenges thrown at the characters.
This is only a provisional rating, as I think about what I've read the rating may well improve.
A good lighthearted read covering real issues around living in Zimbabwe
