review 1: Terry Richardson's book of photographs of and/or related to Lady Gaga tells the story of a year in the life of Gaga, and I am very impressed with his work as a photographer and his ability to capture raw emotion in photographs. I don't believe that I am familiar with Richardson's work outside of this book, so I went into it not really knowing what to expect. I have read some outcry from fellow feminists recently that Richardson is sexist and disrespects women, effectively exploiting them. I cannot lend any support to that idea or, for that matter, defense for Richardson based on this book. There are definitely some shots that are suggestive, but Gaga has always been like that, long before she worked on this project with Richardson and long after. As a Gaga fan (or a monste... morer), I am very pleased with this book and glad that I purchased it. It features hundreds of photos that are exclusive to it; I had not seen most of the photos in the book before going through them, and, altogether, they present so many different facets of Gaga - vulnerability, innocence, intelligence, playfulness, theatricality, sexuality, and so forth. Richardson, merely through photographs, does a fantastic job of expressing how complex of a human being that Gaga truly is. The color of the photographs (of the color photographs, that is; some are in black and white) is vivid and exquisite, and the large size of the book allows for some very large photos, which makes them visually appealing, as they stand out on the pages; in some cases, in fact, one photo is spread across the entirety of two pages. Don't buy this book expecting there to be a lot of textual information, though; aside from Gaga's brief introduction at the beginning of the book and her and Richardson's thank you notes at the end of the book, the text is within the photographs. If you're looking for a biography of Gaga, your best bet is to purchase the DVD ONE SEQUIN AT A TIME; you are not going to get that from this book. I read one review of this book that stated that the book should have included more text, such as explanations of the photographs or at least titles of the photographs, but I do not agree with that; I think that Richardson's beautiful photography speaks for itself. If what I have read about Richardson's sexism is true, then shame on him, but in regards to this book, I give him the thing that he loves and applaud him.
review 2: While there isn't much to read in this book you get a visual understanding of the touring life of Lady Gags. I recieved this book as a Christmas gift from my mom and am so glad she found it. It was amazing to see Gags in concert and to get my own pictures however I wish I had the chance like Richardson to get up close and find out through my lenses who the real Gags is. Terry has done an amazing job capturing this life we rarely get to see. I was intrigued by the up close photos of her outfits, seeing her exercise, eat and do normal things. My favorite pictures were of those with raw emotions. It's one thing to see a person live and performing but to see the moments of emotion show just how real people are. This is a book that will remain in my library. less
