review 1: I heard Terryl and Fiona Givens speak at a conference and was stunned by their ability to weave scholarship with gospel, history and art. This book left me with that same stunned feeling. They write beautifully, they invite us into their truth without trying to simplify the experience for the reader. This book greatly expanded beliefs that I already had and in some cases taught me new truths with a blinding clarity. It is profound and beautiful and one that I will refer back to often. It's a must read for all. While it does reference a lot of LDS theology, it comes across as information and teaching rather than proselytizing. There are a lot of wonderful quotes in this book. I found myself wanting to highlight nearly every word in the book, so I stopped myself and just enjo... moreyed it and only highlighted the best of the best. Which were amazing. Seriously, go read this book!
review 2: Really a nice book. Took a lot of concentration which was good for me. Written like academics it takes a new approach and fresh look at the gospel and why it makes sense, and also why sense at times can be more of an emotional resonance which functions as a proofpoint as strong as any other. I appreciated the variety of literary references if only just to show how well read the authors are and to know our beliefs aren't nearly as unique as we often think they are. Oneofmy favorite parts was the idea that heaven is a reflection of the relationships we have here. I also loved thinking of God as a divinity that chooses to father us and mourn with us. And finally I loved the thoughts about people being the purpose of mortality and the only way we can ever become virtuous. Another good recommendation from Annie. less
