review 1: A really cute, sweet, quick novella from Tessa Dare, her very first published work (I believe is what she said). Cecily has been in love with Luke for years but after a connection they shared the night before he left for war, there’s been little to know communication between them. Luke returns from the war, not physically harmed but he’s lived through horrors and he does not want to unleash his new self on someone so sweet and innocent. What Luke doesn’t realize is that Cecily has done some growing over the years as well. As they are thrown together at a house party they have to break free and show that they are right for each other, no matter what has passed since their last meeting. Fun read!
review 2: This just became a Halloween classic for me. So mu... morech fun! There is no paranormal elements in this story; rather, it is about a man returning from war that still feels like a beast and the woman who gives him his humanity back. And along the way there is a white stag, a midnight encounter with a boar in the forest, and a group of friends with varying opinions on gothic literature.This is the first published work by Tessa Dare and I enjoyed it more than her later books. Her other books have more explicit sex and coarser language, and this one was a lot lighter, which worked well for me. She is a great storyteller and created the gothic mood skillfully. Is it historically accurate? No. Is it a gripping, slightly spooky read? Oh yes. I read it in one sitting.I loved how Dare revealed the layers of each character piece by piece. It was well-paced, which is difficult in a novella. I highly recommend this one...and best of all, it's currently free on Amazon. Definitely a keeper for me! 5 stars. less
