review 1: My first manga. After getting a handle on the right to left reading style this was a breeze. Even though I'm not a beginner when it comes to Japanese cuisine (we were eating our osechi when I started this) I still learned lots of interesting ideas and concepts. This first collection of stories looks at topics like the importance and impact of knife work on cuisine and the incredible effort, technique, and preparation at goes into serving sashimi and sushi. Already on the second volume. The only desire the book leave me with - other than a good Japanese meal - is that I read Japanese and could read all the stories in chronological order rather than in this greatest hits format.
review 2: Only the best food porn you could wish for! The notes actually contain a L
... moreOT of information that otherwise would have gotten lost in translation, so serious foodies might want to look at the notes too. The fighting between Yamaoka and his father gets somewhat distracting, but both men clearly know what they're talking about, so the audience gets to enjoy the show AND learn something. And oh, the food! I miss Japanese food so much. Good thing I'm going to Tokyo in a week! less
