review 1: Nathan has no redeeming qualities, Layla is weak, the big mystery is meh, and the plot is sex sex sex sex sex...There was no plot! Shocking as that might be I expect a plot with my book. And one thing that kept annoying me was the description of the characters, mainly Layla's, good qualities you say it once its ok you say it twice I can forgive that but once you say 3 times its crazy. Its a book, you are meant to show not tell(sort of). And really is it that big of a surprise that Layla is still the same person she has always been? She lost a year of her life not half of it. Brains I forgot about the brains which the characters in this book seem to lack. Thats it thats all I have.
review 2: Scored this as an Amazon freebie but I actually read it initially a few
... more years ago. I was just as perplexed reading it this time as I was the first time. The plot was actually workable, except that Layla had absolutely no backbone. To say that she had a backbone of a soggy noodle is too generous. She's APOLOGIZING to a man who manipulated her, all but forced her to live with him, made her sign a ridiculous contract, and forces her to side with his way of thinking by sexing her into submission. Nathan straddles the line between aggressive/possessive and potentially abusive. That is not attractive to me, nor does it do the term "alpha male" justice. The ending was a bit predictable but I wish there was more drama in terms of Layla sticking up for herself and being independent. Between Nathan and Andrew completely messing with her life, WHY wasn't she running screaming from both of them? Boo. The only thing I was excited about was the location: Pittsburgh (my family's hometown). Besides that, the copious amounts of steamy sex scenes were great. Nathan using those same sexcapades to manipulate Layla? Negative. That's not love folks. The writing was fantastic with minimal typos, but the plot development stumped me. I did like how the author intertwined the flashbacks, history of the character's relationships, and a bit of suspense. Still haven't found the energy to tackle the sequel... I just have a feeling it's going to be a let down. Conclusion - this book was a case of missed potential. less
