review 1: Thom S. Rainer, the President of Lifeway Publishing, is known for his blog and ministry aimed at helping church leaders. In this little book, he turns his attention to church members. In the current "fast food, have it your way" climate of the church, Rainer's book is a call to church members to reevaluate their membership in and dedication to the local church. It is a valuable book that every church member and leader should read.
review 2: As always, Rainer makes some good points and tells nice stories. It is the unexamined assumptions that make it impossible for me to recommend this as a book to give to new members. First is the idea that the reader is a male head of household. Second, that the pastor is a male. Third, that every church is worthy of the devot... moreion he urges. There are toxic churches and toxic pastors. There are churches that need to deal with problems rather than papering over them in the name of unity. Rainer knows all of this and has written about it elsewhere. less
