review 1: I have heard several churches give a copy of this book to new members, so I wanted to see what it had to say. A short book in which Thom Rainer points out six tenets that every church member should embrace. At times his tone is very blunt, and as a pastor, I would almost feel a little self-serving handing this book out to members of my church. However, I do agree with much of what he says. His basic premise is that church members today see "membership" as access to entitlement and privilege, rather than opportunity to give and serve others. Real joy, he contends, is not in getting one's way or in receiving, but in selfless sacrifice for the blessing of others. A very quick read, and worth the hour or so to go through it.
review 2: I AM A Church Member is ... morea very succinct look at what it means to be a part of a local church. Rainer does a very good job of looking at what church membership is and what it is all about. He also challenges Christians to examine their attitude toward the Church and commit to being a healthy, functioning, loving member of a local congregation.Another positive to this book is its brevity. This book is something that could, and has been, successfully used in new member's classes. It is 79 pages long in a small book format. There is also a lot of white on the page, this means that it is something that most people will not be intimidated by. less
