review 1: I don't really have anything to argue with in the philosophy expounded here. But the idea that consciousness is basically a horrible accident loses most of its force when presented in the campy Lovecraftian language and imagery Ligotti uses. It's like being lectured by a Boglin. Ten minutes of the actual real-life news backs up this thesis much more effectively. Still - it's fun to imagine James Hetfield reading this, scratching his head with a shark's fin plectrum, looking for song titles.
review 2: "The measure of a philosopher's thought is not in its answers or the problems it poses, but in how well it fiddles with these answers and problems such that they animate the minds of others." - LigottiIt's a dark, odd little book. I really think they should sell it
... more to teenagers in Hot Topic, they'd make a fortune. Then I also think it should be required reading for anyone considering having children... The real merit of the book is in it's analysis of horror, which was fun... In a hopelessly depressing kind of way. less
