review 1: This could have been a brilliant book. It was an enjoyable and quick read, but not terribly satisfying afterward. Too many of the characters were weakly drawn, including Seth, who is at the center of things, and Logan, who could have been a fascinating read with just a bit more focus. And there were too many themes that were only loosely resolved, if at all: the kittens, the cabin, Duchess (and Clara's reaction to discovering her), the boys' motivation and what they actually did, the sheriff's cancer.... The setting was wonderfully drawn and Maltman makes the community itself a central character, which gives the book its strength.
review 2: I read this book for an in person book discussion. This author is new to me. I found the setting to be very interesti
... moreng to me because I have visited some of the towns mentioned in the book. The plot of this book pulled me in from the very beginning. I found myself thinking I knew what was going to happen next and most of the time I was wrong. The undertone of good vs. evil was well balanced. This book is a great weekend read! less

3.5 stars. It's a toned down Gillian Flynn style book with some supernatural elements mixed in.
