review 1: I'm listening to this book by mistake. I thought I was getting a John Steinbeck that I'd never heard of before. Then, when it was too late and I had no other audio books in the car, I saw that this author was Thomas, not John. I'm so glad I made this mistake! Great story, well read. I'm wondering if this Steinbeck isn't related somehow to John, because there is a character in this book who strongly reminds me of Doc in the Cannery Row stories. I love it.
review 2: I got an autographed copy of this book from the Steinbeck center in Salinas, CA on my honeymoon. Got it more for the souvenir than anything else. Decent story, a bit weak in certain parts. Starts well, but the book as a whole is not great. Some of the writing style is very good though, reminisce
... morent of his father's work, and the main theme of the story, which is the history of the presence of the Chinese Community in California was very much present in at least some of his fathers' books (East of Eden for ex.) less
