review 1: I have absolutely no idea how this book ended up in my reading pile; I can only assume it was because it won a national book award in the 70s and I must have read a glowing review or something; apparently I should have known better. It IS well written, but that redeems very little to me when the main character (in fact most of the characters) are unlikable and the plot uninteresting. This is a novel inside a novel: mid-life-crisis-author writing a quasi autobiographical book about his time at college. Man angst alternating with boy angst, both versions of the narrator pretty unpleasant. I'm sure the prose is well crafted and "superb" as one review said, but a book never wins me over if I don't like its characters, and in this book they range from whiny to useless to wilful... morely ignorant to downright nasty with almost no exceptions. So, if you enjoy language that "flows from the purest vernacular to the elevations demanded by distilled perception" (Washington Post Book World) then do pick this up, but if you prefer a more directed plot and less testosterone angst with your distilled perception, maybe give it a miss.
review 2: Thomas Williams' novel “The Hair of Harold Roux” is quite complex. The story is written within a story during the time of the post Vietnam War. It was published over thirty years ago, and although it has received a National Book Award I found it to be hard to connect to the characters. It was also hard to follow the story line at times. I received this book as a First Reader book from Goodreads and so I try very hard to read the books that I receive that way. This book took me a very long time to read and I must say I really didn’t enjoy it. I am sure that others might enjoy the writing style but I didn’t. I grew up during this time and was really looking forward to reading a book that showed the history of the era and how people interacted, etc. This wasn’t the book. I am sure that there are many readers that will enjoy Mr. Williams book and I will pass my copy on to others who hopefully will enjoy more than I. less
