review 1: This was a hard one for me to rate. You see, tiffany Baker is a terrific writer. The Gilly Salt Sisters is filled with atmospheric renderings and deep emotional prose to bring us to where each character is sitting in their own particular hell. In parts, the narrative could have been shorter, because in parts, its repetitive information. But the real reason I hesitated giving it even four stars is the implausibility of certain scenes. An event would be revealed before the event took place. Okay, here I'm going to give you a fine example straight from the book and it won't give anything away. The gilly girl's write a letter four months before they are going to deliver it and another character finds it. Of course it only means something to the other character and of course fo... moreur months later the letter is delivered, blah, blah blah. A letter written four months before delivery? That doesn't ring true to me. There were little snippets like this throughout the book. Timing is an issue in some of the chapters and yeah some characters did exactly the opposite of what I would have expected them to do and so hmm…should I have given this four stars? I opted for the four stars because as I said previously, baker is a terrific writer. I also have to acknowledge that I would approach the book with joy. Happy to be back to the story of the gilly sisters, though errrrr the timeline issue, inconsistent characters did weigh heavy. Darn it!
review 2: The Gilly Salt Sisters is the story of a family who harvest salt in a march on Cape Cod, focusing on the 2 sisters, Claire and Joanna. Joanna loves the land and dutifully carries on helping her mother with the work of harvesting the salt but Claire hates it and marries a man she doesn't love to get as far away from the salt as she can. In her hatred for the salt and the work involved with it, she becomes bitter and destructive causing an accident which changes Sarah's life forever. In the story, a myth is implied that there is a curse on the Gilly family involving the salt, especially male members of the family. The Turner family, the wealthiest family in the town of Prospect, and the Gilly family have been bitter enemies since before Joanna and Claire were born and yet the families become entwined in secret ways. The Turner family is determined to take possessions of the salt marsh and the Gilly family is just as determined to hold on to it even when they find themselves in dire financial circumstances. The two sisters come together after a long estrangement through unusual circumstances. Although I enjoyed the book because of the well-done character portrayal of the two sisters, I found the story dragged at times and one of the mysteries of the novel never was answered. less

A good read for the beach. The ending seemed a bit rushed, but good overall.
