review 1: I listened to this book on audio and wanted to dismiss it as melodramatic and cliched. But the writing was better than that. It is a plot-driven story, but boasts some powerful imagery and painful truths. By the end of the tale, I was hooked and really wanted to see how things would turn out, and I really enjoyed the way that the author played with the good and evil - no character was totally one way or the other - well-written.
review 2: The book kept my interest, but more because I kept looking for the story that Baker's misdirections seemed to promise. The mystery of Gert and how she died, the Snow girls' abilities, Hazel's background - these all hinted at a really good book that never materialized. Some of it was packed into a rushed ending; some just dangl
... moreed, forgotten. It's a pity because Baker created strong characters I wanted to know more about. less
