review 1: This book definitely kept me interested in the way it was written just kept me reading through the chapters. Event thought it is definitely a difficult read as all books about Economics, but amazingly it kept me thinking and imagining myself being in charge of a countries economy and how my actions could effect the people.I think that Tim Hardford discusses really important things in this book such as that all the things our government does is for our own good even if it seems like it isn't.I think this book is good for people who start learning macroeconomics because Hardford uses really simple language and interesting stories related to the topic so beginner would be motivated to be interested in the macroeconomics after the book is over.

... moredy a fan of this economist's work. In this book he details how complex an economy is. He weighs the risks and rewards of various forms of government action to temper the swings of cyclical and catastrophic influences. It is rich with examples of economic crises all over the world, but most of the focus is on Britain and the US.It would seem he leans somewhat left if you only read this, but combined with his other books I consider him appropriately centrist. Best of all, he has plenty of critique for well-published economists on both sides in the US. Best of all, he spells out the questions that still remain, and stresses that the practice of economics is about trying to solve problems, not about forecasting. My only complaint about this book is the faux dialogue format. He is a better writer without it. But this book, and others similar to it, are important road maps to the economic policy that is pitched during elections. less
