review 1: This is my first novel by Tim Hallinan. I know that it is part four of a series, but it stands alone. "Well-written" doesn't even come close to describing the author's phraseology. What a fresh voice! The plot is fast-paced and convoluted...the characters are engaging. As a reader, I was conflicted from start to finish as to who was "good" and who was "bad" because the author creates empathy for everyone. That, in and of itself, is one of the hard-scrabble lessons woven into the text. This is a murder mystery with intellectual humor and dirt-under-the nails realism. Starts out light with a "gee, this is terrific", finishes heavy with a somber "wow." I absolutely loved it.
review 2: Although the main character is a burglar rather than a criminal defense lawyer,
... morethis book reminded me a lot of the Lincoln Lawyer in the way it was written and its overall feel. This is a good thing; I liked the Lincoln Lawyer. While this book was neither intended to be, nor would it pass for, great literature, it was a fun read with some good dialogue, unusual characters, clever situations, and interesting twists. This is a good beach, airplane, or vacation read. It is also a good one to read when you want something fun to divert you for a while from heavier reading or from the stresses that can inhere in everyday life. less

One of my favorite crime series ever. This one fell apart a bit near the climax but still engaging.
