Poke Rafferty Mystery
review 1: Enjoy Timothy Hallinan as an artist - whichever series I'm reading. This is a Poke Rafferty story - and I stayed up most of the night reading it. Poke gets involved in the death of a man he does not know but whose death really impacts Poke's life. He spends most of the book trying to be invisible while solving the mystery at the same time - with pockets full of prepaid phones; makeup to help him blend in; riding in the back of cars used by roving doctors/nurses; and staying in fleabag hotels. The story reminds the reader that the vibrations from Vietnam are still being felt in Southeast Asia. If you haven't read Hallinan, I recommend the author.
review 2: This is a gripping series of books set in modern Thailand. The main character is in love with his lif
... moree, his family and the place he lives but he keeps getting mixed up in crazy, dangerous events. I can't think of another character like him in that joy he finds in his family (except for his father but he has many reasons for not thinking much of him). This main character is someone you'd want to know and who you'd be frustrated with at times too so. He's not a perfect person which comes through loud and clear. The author gives a lot of detail about Thailand - mostly the dark side but the main character counterbalances the dark so well that the books are optimistic and easy to read despite the really bad events. less

Arguably the best of the Poke Rafferty series. Vietnam War comes to Bangkok.

This was not my favorite Poke Rafferty book, but I still enjoyed it.

Too gruesome for my tastes but it was a page turner.

Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.
