Junior Bender
review 1: A very enjoyable mystery featuring Junior Bender, a burglar since age 15 but now the go to person when criminals need a someone to serve as their private detective. Not having read the two previous books in the series I am probably missing some of the details of Junior's career but that didn't get in the way of following the story. I liked a lot of things about this book. It had great characters, including a mob boss in his 90s but no less scary and a reclusive woman once hailed as the most beautiful woman by Life magazine. Junior is hired to find out what really happened to the actress back in the 50s when her career was derailed by scandal. While the book did remind me of Donald Westlake and Carl Hiassen in its dark humor, it reminded me most of all of Raymond Chandler a... morend Ross MacDonald whose more hard boiled detectives covered the seamy side of Hollywood. The ending was a bit confused but overall very good.
review 2: In this third outing with Junior Bender, he is set the task of solving a 'crime' that is older than he is. A fine follow-on to the first two books, be prepared to spend a fair amount of the book with characters other than Junior Bender, as we travel into the past to see what really happened to the Hollywood starlet whose fame was stolen and whose life was ruined. I missed spending time with several of the other characters from the series that I'd become fond of, but I still enjoyed the book a great deal! less
