Poke Rafferty Mystery
review 1: This series just keeps getting better. Not a traditional mystery protagonist by any means but engaging characters and compelling stories make you want to come back for more. And, if you have an interest in Thai culture all the better. Perhaps not as in depth an immersion in Thailand as John Burdett's equally compelling series starring morally conflicted Buddhist cop Sonchai Jitpleecheep, but an enormously satisfying read. Maybe they'll do a crossover. I'd buy it.
review 2: I have really enjoyed this series. Poke Rafferty, an American travel writer, is always getting into 'trouble' in his adopted home of Bangkok. He is married to Rose and they have adopted a 12 year old girl off of the streets - Miaow. In this book he gets caught up in some ancient history
... morethat started during the Vietnam War. An American that back than had killed many innocent women and children has resurfaced in Bangkok. He is working for the government under an old plan called the Phoenix Program. It has been brought back to help 'control' the Muslim 'problem' in the south of Thailand. Poke tracks him down and lets him know that there are four witnesses to what he did during the war and that he is going to expose him. This book is rich in the background of Thailand (the author lives there part of each year), character development, lots of action and always bringing to light some fact relevant to the past or current history of Bangkok. less
