review 1: There are parts of this book that are extremely funny. There are moments when, if you have ever read any records of Hitler's private conversations (where he comes across like a combination of pernickety vegetarian, irritating geek, and loudmouthed pub bore), you find yourself thinking yes, this sounds tediously like him... the clunking humour, the inability to let go of detail... The plot starts from an extraordinary premise which is never explained and needs no explanation. It then proceeds in a manner which, whilst sometimes creaking a little under the strain, is credible enough to work. A single POV is used throughout and it works very well. The voice you are hearing becomes familiar and even likeable at times and then one remembers whose it is... which is uncomforta... moreble. There are moments when you feel slightly guilty for being amused. That feeling of discomfort, of ambiguity, was something I liked about this book. It is what drives so much of the story, after all. There are parts whe you feel that the book shows insight into the unbelievably superficial society in which we now live, the triviality of our public discourse and the amorality of our private thoughts. The author makes some of his points simply by the actions of supporting characters, but at other times the narrator spells out his conclusions and when that happens, they sometimes strike one as eminently true. Then you remember who you're agreeing with. There are those who would condemn this book because it's about Hitler, so it just can't be funny and if it is, it shouldn't be. I'm not going to argue the point on that, save to say I certainly don't think the book in any way vindicates or whitewashes Hitler. He remains what he was - a bizarre creature with an entirely alien morality, an extraordinary being driven by a horrifying mixture of deeply distorted love and implacable hate. So, rather than making Hitler atttractive, the book looks for the elements of his character and persona that demonstrably were attractive to some - and uses them cunningly. It teaches us not to be too smug about the vaunted sophistication of the present... Not to be so sure that it couldn't happen again. Because it can and it probably will, if we aren't vigilant - and that's what makes reading this sometimes amusing, sometimes unpleasant book worthwhile.
