review 1: This title is a good read for any writer in that it uses great skill developing real people with histories of their own and the environment surrounding them. I suspect we shop with these kinds of folks both good and bad, at the supermarket. The story itself has a great premise and tons of potential. I found though that the suspense wasn't enough to keep any edge for the reader and ultimately, the conclusion was just a bit too slow in coming. Still, I'll assume that this is a first effort and will certainly give T.L. Haddix another test drive if the story in the next book appeals to me. Keep at it!
review 2: 3.5 stars. Secrets in the Shadows was an ok read. This book was not my usual cup of tea, but I liked the build up and the twists, which were pretty obv
... moreious and not much of a mystery. I love a good twisted read with a with a steamy romance and great chemistry and a wonderful HEA. While Secrets in the shadows was certainly twisted, the romance and chemistry fell flat. The H and h just didn't have that consuming love that makes a great happily ever after. Though there was a sweet HEA, there was some questions to their relationship left utnanswered. I do have to applaud the author though on building a story on such a touchy subject matter such as childhood sexual abuse by a family member and its lasting psychological effects with out touching too much on the gory details of the actual abuse. reading it made me sad and upset but never so grossed out I couldn't read on.I'm glad for the warning in the blurb. If you are squeamish about this subject matter it may not be for you, but really I think the author did brilliantly showing us the ugly side, with out making us sick and turn away. In conclusion, the romance really did kill this for me. While it was certainly twisted with a touchy subject that the author touched on masterfully, It simply just wasn't enough for me to really get into it. 3.5 stars less
