review 1: Wow. Painful. Just painful. Can't believe this is the same author who wrote Give a Boy a Gun. It was labeled as "middle grade" on the back, but I had to stop listening with my son when it started getting really weird...a lot of statutory rape stuff, psychotic parents, and people threatening each other with knives...all the men in this book creeped me out. I would not recommend this book to children. Or adults. Maybe a teenager with not at all discriminating tastes who likes mysteries but doesn't care about quality writing/reading. Do not think I'll be reading any more from this author.
review 2: 3 1/2 stars. I would recommend this to my students who are looking for a quick, fast-paced read. The author throws suspicion on many of the characters to keep you gue... moressing. I gave this a lower rating because the characters are not very well developed, and some of the relationships are contrived. Much of this is due to the length of the novel, which is a strong selling point for reluctant readers. less
