review 1: These two could write the copy on a candy wrapper and it would be memorable. Her gift for tender language and his dark creepy characters blend beautifully. It took me about three chapters to fall in love with this book, and then I was completely swept up in it. My dad was a revenuer and I adored how human these agents were. For those of us who lived through Katrina, it's eerie to imagine the levees breaking along the river and drowning family farms while Washington stood silent. Lots of fun little references to other Oxford writers but great historical research and the strangest and strongest female lead since Cold Mountain.
review 2: Not bad because it had all the plot elements and described the flood well. But it could have been very good if the historical al... morelusions were correct. The book takes place in the 1920's during Prohibition in rural Mississippi. Alas, rural electrification in the South did not even begin until after TVA was created in 1933, the same year Prohibition was repealed, with electricity arriving much later in more remote moonshining areas since they were less populated and moonshiners were so resistant to federal authorities. So rural Mississippi moonshiners like Jesse and Dixie Clay couldn't have had all the electrical appliances mentioned... The historical inaccuracies took away from enjoying what would otherwise have been a good read. Several other images just didn't work at all, such as drinking from a soda bottle on horseback. Try that and you'll lose teeth and/or have stomach problems - you certainly would get sugary syrup all over a baby's face. Too bad...perhaps a better editor would have caught such problems. less
