review 1: I found myself agreeing with a lot of the author's ideas, and why wouldn't anyone? This is a great child-rearing manifesto, encouraging you to leave the kids alone so they learn to become more resourceful and ultimately amuse themselves, leaving you more time to sleep and/or drink beer. Does seem more possible if you, like the author can make a living by writing an live on a farm in the countryside but there is still plently to take from it even if this is not your set-up.
review 2: Overall, I think this book presents lots of basic, common sense information about why being a more laid back parent has many benefits. As an anti-TV, anti-cable, anti-consumerism gal, I thought this book would strike more of a chord with me than it has in reality. I am only a few c
... morehapters in, but there are a few things that I'd like to point out about this book that I think are worth noting. I somewhat disagree with his position on books and reading. I appreciate his idolization of the classics (Dahl, Blake, et. al.) but I have to disagree with the notion that we should reject books in regards to teaching children morals and the proper way in which to treat others. The author suggests that we should reject all things 'Puritan,' but I believe that it is through literature that children best learn about moral and ethical conflicts, and how to use their best judgement in order to work through problems. That being said, I have to agree with his stance on reading for fun, as well as the 'DOWN WITH SCHOOL' philosophy that is presented as an underlying theme throughout the book. Children should choose what to read and should feel free to explore the world of literature without the constant scrutiny of their parents/elders. Amen to that!Lastly, this book offers a lot of insight into the mass consumerism with which children are inundated. I very much appreciate the author's stance on rejecting TV, cable, and materialism, while promoting the idea that children can have fun by recycling old, unused household items to have fun and benefit from experiential learning.Overall, a good book. less
