review 1: The book has a pleasant pace and I think it really did influence my parenting style. For example, I used to rush out of bed on Saturday morning to get chores started, breakfast going etc. After reading the book, I found myself lingering in bed with my husband, and letting the kids fend for themselves. It was heaven-- and paid off big time with breakfast in bed provided by my 10 year old. Without any prompting or adult assistance, he made scrambled eggs and bacon and brought them up to me on my birthday. On the other hand, our basement apartment tenant (who works until 2:30 AM) has asked me to go back to enforcing my previous control over my kids, as they cannot stop themselves from running around like a pack of horses when I am not there to shush them and remind them ... moreto go outside. I love his message of working fewer hours outside the home. But I think he really goes off the rails when extolling private schools. There are inconsistencies of philosophy throughout the book, but this seemed the most glaring. On the other hand, although I am a public school parent, I really do love to hear about the advantages of private school, so I didn't really mind it. But I can see how it may really bother someone who is looking for a book that will tell them "this is the right way to do it-- trust me." Instead, Hodgkinson message was "Do whatever the hell makes you happy as a parent-- I have absolutely no expertise, but I'm having a good time and you can too!"I'd love to drink an ale with Hodgkinson while our kids play off in the distance in a field. Cheers!
review 2: I'm tempted to give this book a 5 star rating, but since there are significant portions that I strongly disagree with, a 4 is probably a more honest rating. I found so much truth and wisdom in Hodgkinson's perspective on life and parenting, and actually one of the enjoyable aspects of reading this book was discerning between the parts of his philosophy that match up beautifully with a Kingdom mindset and the parts that sound good but are far off. I'm still mulling a lot of the ideas over in my head and look forward to discussing "idle parenting" with all the friends I'm going to convince to read this book. less

Meh. Premise sounded good but the author got on my nerves.
