review 1: Meh. Reads like a middle-schooler's attempt at humor. Mention all the things that are silly about something and just see how funny that is! Reminds me of the humor of F. Lee Martinez or maybe flailing comedians. Humor worth reading as literature is hard, but Terry Pratchett can do it and so can Christopher Moore more often than not. Not sure if Mr. Holt has it in him to write a character or involve them in scenarios that might evoke sympathy or drama. Looks like other folks actually liked it, so who am I to judge?

I actually liked the LOTR parody parts and I loved the very liberal snooty elves criticizing one another's "slim volumes." The simultaneous mockery of heartless corporate culture (ready to exploit all and sundry for the almighty dollar) meant that the parody was nicely even-handed across the spectrum of modern viewpoints. less

(3.5) Tom Holt does his thing. Some nice touches - the Sylvan Elves' Youth Ensemble, for example.

Decent concept of a book and interesting characters but something lacked it the storyline.
