review 1: Terry Rand is a thief by birth, but he is trying to break the family tradition. This proves hard to do when he meets his mother's estranged family and is quickly thrust back into the life he left behind, a life that is also second nature to him. Throughout the book he tries to protect his family and his high school girlfriend who is now married to his ex-best friend. A very different book that kinda grew on me while I was reading it.
review 2: Terrier Rand is at a crossroads. He is a life-long thief from a family of thieves, a "second story man" who can crack any house, pick any lock. His former best friend, Chub, who married Terrier's life long love is in a lot of trouble. He sold a hot car and a getaway plan to a heavy hitting group of pro bank robbers. The... more robbery goes to hell and three security guards are killed in the crossfire. The police and the feds are everywhere, turning up the heat on everybody in the criminal underworld. Chub disappears, being tracked by a terrifying psychopathic hitman whom the local syndicate has hired to hush him permanently. Chub's wife, Terrier's ex-love Kimmy, begs Terrier to help bring him home. Terrier scours the underworld, from the rotting local mob group, to a dark cabal of violent robbers. He must deal with his personal baggage and use all of his wiles to keep the cops, crooks and scammers at bay. This was a very good book, a sequel to The Last Kind Words, which introduced the Rands and Terrier. This is an excellent dark series, a breakthrough for the wonderfully talented Tom Piccirilli, and one that will hopefully continue. less
