review 1: This book captured me from the first moment....the only other book to do this in the same way was Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials". There was lots of drama, magical characters and intriguing twists. Only book 2 now. What made this book even more fabulous was the setting of the story in London. If I could change just one thing - it would be to not have the story suddenly switch to Fil in first person.... For me it jarred.
review 2: This book was so unusual and so good!! The creatures in the world were a little hard to imagine but the descriptions were well done. I liked Beth and Fil, really neat characters in a world within our own world - great use of the subtleties of the technology/industrial age mixed with a fantasy touch. If you like Neil Gaiman or eve
... moren a little Piers Anthony - this had some elements of that within it. The beginning was a little slow to figure out, but once Beth and Fil went to find the Pavement Priests to start recruiting their army I was hooked! I don't think I will ever look at statues anywhere the same way again (just like with Dr. Who heeh). Really interesting storyline, great pace, and a shocking ending that I really didn't see coming. I am going to look for the second one :) less

Recommend this one for fans of Neil Gaiman. Great writing, characters, and world building.

new vs old, good vs evil...or is it. Nothing is quite as it seems
