review 1: This book is about a little English language newspaper established in 1953 in Rome. It's very well done. It's a series of short stories about people involved with the paper in varying ways. These stories are interwoven with the story of the newspaper itself. All this is genuinely interesting. The people are 3 dimensional and I genuinely cared about them. And the inner workings of the newspaper are engrossing. But SO depressing. Every single story ends badly in some creative way or other. The only person in the whole book who is successful is an utterly repugnant narcissist. I wish I hadn't read it, not that I could stop once I started. Thus the 3 stars for a well written book by a talented guy.
review 2: Totally unimpressed, not worth the time I spent reading
... moreit. The plot device is well done, with the individual stories weaving together well into a coherent novel. But the book was unnecessarily depressing - most of the stories left me feeling like life is grim and pointless. The message seems to be: life sucks, and we're all going down. Not all of the characters went up in flames, but there was something depressing about every story. less

I liked each individual chapter, but somehow the whole left me unsatisfied.
