review 1: Got this from the library and left it in the backseat of the car. As I had hoped, both kids picked it up and read it (not together). I didn't have to suggest the book, they both were interested enough to give it a reread. It is appealing to the elementary school age set and shows that small, simple acts of kindness can not only turn around someone else's day, but also make your own more positive. My younger kid liked how the protagonist went from being selfish and not allowing his sister to play with his blocks to sharing them with her when she was having a bad day because her dog chewed off one of her doll's limbs. My older kid liked how the boy thought about how even the dog had a bucket and so instead of yelling at him, found a way to help the victim (his little si... morester in situation just described) find a new activity and not just yelling, "bad dog" and continuing a cycle of bucket-emptying with really resolving the problem. This book *shows* that small acts of kindness add up and make a positive difference. It is very accessible in terms of actions a young child could do (e.g. Helping someone pick up a stack of dropped papers). Hopefully will inspire even more kindness in our own house and in the classroom and team/small group settings.
review 2: This book provides a great visual to show children how words and actions can either build up a person or knock them down. After a lesson from his grandfather, Felix wakes up one morning with an invisible bucket of water floating above his head. The bucket is half-full, symbolizing that his day could go either way. When bad things happen or mean people hurt his feelings, water splashes out; when positive reinforcement is received or acts of kindness are shared, big fat drops fill his bucket.Felix is starting to get the hang of this and soon he realizes that everyone must have a bucket. What he did not realize was what would happen to his bucket when filling others.A great resource to start a conversation on empathy and compassion and how even the smallest of things can fill someone’s bucket. less
