Victor the Assassin
review 1: This is the second book featuring the enigmatic killer for hire only known as Victor (and by several aliases). Gravely wounded at the end of the first book, he is healed due to the discreet intervention of the CIA. Victor now owes them three kills, after which he is promised freedom by his handler. Thrust into the lucrative and vile illegal arms trade, Victor seems like a veritable saint compared to the people he is chasing. The CIA has a cunning plan: the will use Victor to target rival factions of arms dealers provoking a war between them that will destroy both of their networks. Things start to go wrong when Victor loses a target amidst a bloodbath at a Minsk hotel. Unbeknownst to him, he kills three Israeli agents, and soon he is on the run from the Mossad as well as r... moreogue CIA agents that hope to silence him forever. This was a pretty good book, Victor remains a fascinating character, a loner, something of a Jack Reacher for hired killers if you can imagine such a thing. Wood keeps the pace going pretty well, and the differing locations throughout Europe were interesting. The only thing that made me a little nervous was the "gun porn" as all of Victor's weapons and ammunition were lovingly described in great detail. I understand that this was a spy novel about a hired killer and some of this is necessary, but the level of detail and the glorification of the hardware of killing is a bit much. One can almost imagine a future Adam Lanza masturbating furiously while reading the breathless descriptions of the instruments of mass death.
review 2: I had never read nor even heard of this author, but this was an excellent, excellent, excellent read. I love espionage novels and the good ones are few and far between since the Cold War ended, imho! There is one caveat tho' - there is a good amount of detail concerning ordnance. I used to go to gun shows and the NRA used to send me love letters (lol) so I didn't mind it, but if that's not your thing, well, just skim those parts - it is still a riveting novel. Thank you Mr. Wood and I'll be looking for you on the shelves, keep writing! less
