review 1: I'm really not sure whether to give this a 2 or a 3 — I guess it's kind of in between. I didn't hate it, but I really had to force myself to get through the whole thing. There were parts I enjoyed, but for the most part, I felt like the world — which, on the surface, seems really interesting and well-developed — never really felt real to me, nor did any of the characters. I can't exactly explain why, but I just never really felt "all in" at any point. There are a lot of aspects of both the setting and plot which are barely explained or delved into, so it all felt like good ideas with only mediocre execution. I also had a hard time with the whole Petling thing; it's a little bit silly in the midst of an otherwise somewhat epic fantasy story, and I say that as someone ... morewho deeply loves both animals and children's books. I mean, for one thing, what about all the pets that don't neatly fit into the clans in Sylver (turtles, fish, goats, iguanas, etc.)? And what about the pets who are loved by adults — what happens to them? I feel like the whole story would have been stronger without that, or at least if it were done in a somehow more believable way.
review 2: A promising start: I had high hopes for this fantasy, but sadly it lost its intrigue once we moved into the realms of the deceased - but resurrected - pets and other animals. The Twistrose Key itself wasn't particularly central to the plot, but it made a good title. The characters were never quite fully developed,and I think it's mainly because the storyline demanded much more space than it was given. I read to the end, but have to say I found it less than satisfactory. With all its characters and settings, perhaps 500 pages would have given it a better chance to develop. less
