review 1: First night empty nesters, the misunderstood Mr. Tall, the widow of her misunderstood artist husband, Jack of th beanstalk and what happens when we close a book. Are you interested yet? I absolutely loved "Jim The Boy", and Tony Earley once again demonstrates his wonderful storytelling skill in this wonderful collection. Each story is a metaphor about life. Sounds trite, I know, but in this case not so!!
review 2: Tony Earley earns an extra star for creativity and originality. Each of these stories takes us to a time and place far from the present--either the often-distant past or, in the case of Jack and the Mad Dog, a phantasmagoric, fairy-tale setting. The mood created in each of the stories is palpable: deep mountain valleys, abandoned houses, musty cel... morelars, wrecked boats sailing through the clouds. It makes for delicious fun. My favorite story was "The Cryptozoologist," with its keenly drawn characters and powerful dynamics at work. Its sister story, "Mr. Tall," was also exquisitely detailed, painting a lovely picture of loneliness and despair. One problem I had with several of these 6 stories and one novella was with the endings, which sometimes felt unnaturally stunted, as though Early had tired of the story and decided to just cut them off before they had spun out their full organic energy. And while I loved the concept and the gorgeous writing of "Jack and the Mad Dog" (the novella), it never quite captured my attention thematically. Nevertheless, This is a solid collection from a masterful writer. I look forward to reading more of his stories. less
