review 1: My love affair with Jansson's book continues, now fueled by this claustrophobic novel, more forceful than any of Scandinavian noir I've read. It's elegant and impartial, although this time Jansson seems to have little kindness for her characters; her keen eye strips them of excuses. In my mind, Katri and Anna formed as two faces of one person. They're both wildly inadequate for the world they live in, one dressing in infantile innocence while deeply cynical, the other observant and free of delusions, bearing lots of kindness but unable to express it. It is difficult to evade biographical interpretations of this novel, but I'd say it reflects Jansson's experience with people; it's general as well as personal, and digs into the core of social realities.
review 2:
... more I quite enjoyed this book, particularly the beginning. A very good read for a cold winter evening. An odd little tale to tell by the fire. This is a book about lying - to yourself and to others, and what happens as a result. It was very vivid and more than a little atmospheric.I was a little unsatisfied with the ending (which is why I have given it 4 stars instead of 5). The book felt as though it was building towards something all the way through, and I was expecting something strange and enlightening to happen at the end... but somehow it fell short on what it promised and I don't love it as much as I thought I would as a result. It was a great read and it had some lovely little touches, it felt like a modern fairy tale in places. Complete with all the children chanting "Witch"!An interesting read and something I may come back to, but not quite the book I thought it might be when I started reading it. less

Entirely unsettling and full of unsympathetic characters, yet difficult to put down. Brazen!

This book is something between an Ingmar Bergman film and a Fanny Howe novel.
