review 1: I would recommend this book to anyone who values character development over plot development. It's a wonderful thing to some, and very difficult to others. Fortunately, I fall into the former category!Upon finishing the book, I felt like I had a bunch of puzzle pieces and I was to put them together (in the fun way!) Jansson speaks largely through symbols, something that I'm quite fond of. The way that it was written almost feels like a fairy tale. A pretty depressing fairy tale, but one nonetheless. There is something about the way she tells the story that makes it seem almost whimsical. I thought it was a very quick and entertaining read. It leaves a lot to discuss. I think it'd make a great book club book!
review 2: "the evanescent smell of unread book, a sme
... morell unlike any other" - if that's a familiar smell to you, and more importantly a familiar evanescence, this book is for you.First things first - avoid Ali Smith's introduction and read that as an afterword instead if you don't want spoilers. This book features an excellent story, compelling characters and landscape, and writing so finely textured and matched to the content that true immersion takes place. The clarity of the language is intensely attractive as it narrates a tense, unusual situation between extremely unique individuals. The situation is so tightly wound and narrated so concisely and evocatively that much of this short book about drama between a small set of characters in the winter reads like a thriller. I'm not interested in spoiling the story for anyone, so here are some examples of the writing:she worked on the assumption that every household was naturally hostile towards its neighborspeople like you a little less when they can cheat youKatri's laugh had nothing in common with her terrifying smilegiven the dog a name because nameless things have a tendency to growthe lie came easily, like a gift to someone you value less

It's a better book if you imagine all the characters as moomins.

Stark—even banal, yet astonishingly beautiful.
