review 1: 4.5 StarsI actually loved Bound by Song even more the 2nd time around!Max is a gorgeous rock star who is broody and mysterious. Grace is a good Christian girl who is trying to get back on her feet after losing her job and moving back home with her family. While on vacation with her family in Scotland, Max meets Grace and knows instantly that she is his mate. However, at the time, Grace has a boyfriend and wants nothing to do with Max. So Max makes some changes to his tour and heads to the U.S. to find Grace and sweep her off her feet. However, when he does find her, she still doesn't want to have anything to do with him. It was a bit of a blow to his ego because Max is extremely used to getting his way... ALL the time! Max really has to do some growing and soul searching. ... moreOld ghosts come to light and threaten to keep him and Grace from being together. They also put a strain on his relationship with his brother, Niall. Max has to really dig deep and learn to open up and trust others to help him shoulder his demons. Grace had her own little things that she needed to work out but I personally think this story was more about Max becoming a better, stronger and happier Max.Bound by Song is definitely different then the other books in this series. While those were more action packed and dangerous, this one is more on the emotional side. I loved seeing all the other characters from the previous books. And, not only are we introduced to some new characters, but we are being set up for the next book featuring Niall! I'm excited for his book! He's been a favorite of mine since the beginning! :) The Cauld Ane series has definitely become a favorite of mine and I can't wait to see how everything plays out!
review 2: I've had the pleasure of reading all of the books (so far) in Tracey Jane Jackson's Caulde Ane series. This one is my absolute favorite, which is strange because it is by far the quietest installment of the series. Sure, there's a century-old murder in the mix (more on that later), but there are no bad guys chasing Grace Wilson and Max MacMillan with hypodermic needles full of Red Fang, that noxious Icelandic botanical, fatal to the long-lived and nearly invincible Caulde Ane. No murderous mother plots the couple's downfall. The basic story is straight forward. Max, lead singer of the mega-star rock group FALLEN CROWN, is a Caulde Ane who has found his soul's mate in Grace Wilson, a down-to-earth Christian girl, trying to get on her feet after a job loss lands her back at her parents' Vancouver, Washington home. Grace and Max met briefly after a concert in Scotland three months before. Those few moments changed Max's world and, though she works hard to deny it, Grace felt something, too. After months of searching, Max locates Grace and sets out to make her his own.Only Max is not a particularly likable fellow. All of Jackson's Cauld Ane hunks are alpha males--strong, protective, a little arrogant--but they also have a basic social know-how, a grace, which Max entirely lacks. As far as interpersonal relationships go, Max is a bull in a china shop. A raging bull. And Jackson makes this perfectly understandable and even endearing. Almost a century ago, he found his younger sister's murdered, defiled body and, as we find out, felt forced to protect the rest of his family from at least part of the truth surrounding her killing. For the past few decades, he's been a rock God who answers to no one in his day-to-day life. He has probably two friends in the world, one of whom is his brother Niall, also in the band. Except for frequent meaningless sexual encounters, which come to an end after he meets Grace, Max is a man who keeps his world small, constrained, controllable. We all know this man. He's real in a way that Jackson's other heroes, breathtaking as they are, never quite match.Grace is also a fully realized character. Of all the heroines in the series, she's the one whose pre-romance life seems the most real. Her belief system, her strengths, her self-doubts are cohesive. So, when she balks at her attraction to Max, we don't say "oh, come on already...you know you want him..." Because wanting Max is not enough. The question for Grace is does he fit? Do they fit? Is it possible for a man like Max to co-exist with a faith that's essential to her? That said, Grace can get a little annoying. For someone who knows herself so well, and seems to understand Max, she's awfully hard on him when it comes to opening up about his sister's murder. Yeah, Max needs to be dragged into exposing his vulnerability kicking and screaming, but I thought she went a little too far when they were in Scotland and she decided the whole future of their relationship depended on him revealing something that happened back in the 1870s.My only other critique of the novel has to do with Grace's sister Maggie's illness. Maggie is so pivotal in convincing Grace to at least give Max a chance. After seeding clues about the true gravity of Maggie's situation beautifully throughout the book, Jackson sort of rushes the resolution. I would have liked the tension drawn out for another scene or two in Scotland, focusing on SHOWING Samantha's efforts rather than summarizing them, and also letting us see Grace alone with Maggie, neither of them quite sure about how it would all turn out.Overall, though, amazing book. Now I want to know about Niall. Next installment, please! less
