review 1: This one is a sequel and should be read in order because the story picks right up where The Bride Price left off. The plot formula is much of the same which I enjoyed. It tied off a few dangling threads from the first one, but also introduced a few new ones and there is still a feel of not quite understanding what the villains are up to.The story shifts from Sophie and Jamie in the lead roles though they still get a huge amount of page time. This story focuses on Sophie's younger sister, Emma Wellington and Richard's younger brother, Clayton Madden. Neither of them are like their siblings in personality and character. Sophie was studious and driven while Emma is shallow and a flighty commit-o-phobe. Clayton is a respected member of government close to the president a... morend is now the responsible sibling since his brother never came to terms with what happened to their family. Emma lives in the present and life is not very good with her sister and brother and law missing/presumed dead. She continues with her interests- dancing, shopping, friends and flirting even while she worries about how she's going to deal with the change in financial situation and missing her family. She is being watched by a guy in a car so obviously the FBI wonders if she had something to do with the disappearance. Then one night after shopping, she tumbles through time and ends up in a carriage house in 1863 Washington DC.Clayton is smitten by the oddly-dressed and odd mannered woman whom he finds on his premises. Before he can make sense of things, Andrew scares her and off they go chasing her through the streets. She sprains her ankle and now she is in his care. He takes her to a friend because he can't have an unchaperoned single lady in his home and then the mystery woman disappears and Andrew knows something of it.Emma is whisked out of DC to Harrisburg because Andrew recognizes that Emma is another time traveler like her sister and brother in law. He threatens her at first, but soon learns she really is Sophie's sister. Emma stays with Sophie and Jamie at the doctor's home. Sophie is dealing with illness from her pregnancy and Jamie continues to train cavalry troops. They squabble like any couple. Emma was taken by Clayton and she misses him. But when they meet up, she plays cagey with him because she is frightened about how she is quickly becoming attached.Just when Emma starts to give Clay a chance, an old family friend of Clay's, Rose comes on the scene and insinuates herself into the picture. They are also distracted by the disappearance of Topper and other intrigues going on that lead to live-threatening situations, strained emotions and a big plot that could change history.Like the last one, the plot was decent and I enjoyed the adventures going on. The plot still had a looser feel to it that leaves some thing unexplained that I thought should be or at least hints that there will be an explanation. I was truly relieved that Richard's drinking issues were addressed. That upset me terribly in the first story that people knew, but did nothing. I still was left wondering a great deal about what the villains were accomplishing through their interference with history. I know ultimately they want power, but I just wanted a few more details over specific plans to that effect. I am glad to say that there is one instance the villain's plot was brought into focus and that was in regard to Topper's secrets. Glad to have some answers there.Again, I had some trouble with the couples. Sophie is more settled and less clingy and for that I am glad. I like that she is the stronger, older sister even though she's dealing with the physical illness of her pregnancy and an overprotective husband. I like certain things about the new couple, but other stuff got to me. I liked Emma as a feisty girl and didn't even mind that she seemed shallow at first because she grows away from it little by little. It was her back and forth stuff with Clay that bugged me. She wanted a light flirtation or so she said and he was serious. Then when another gal comes along, she's suddenly this jealousy-laden cat who wants full commitment which he had been giving her. The other thing was the whole last half of the book turned into a farce in a way when it came to the couples. Jamie and Clayton know of a dangerous plot, but Clayton insists on secrecy from their ladies. This secrecy translates into taking the big-bad Neanderthal approach to the women who naturally, react and rebel at this high-handedness enough to do stupid things. It was funny in a way, but it was over the top and out of character with the first half of the book. I enjoyed the tender romance, the passion and even a little of the marital conflict. I liked Emma for Clayton and I think they balance each other in ways. The subplots for Andrew and Christine's own love stories were a nice touch and will be ongoing just as some of the villain's are still left in the shadows and plotting away. The second book was much like the first in that generally I found it enjoyable and still wish to see what happens with the other characters and the ongoing plotting with the bad guys both future and past. I think this has appeal for sweet historical romance lovers who can handle some mild spice.
review 2: What a great book, rich in history (Civil War), time travel, romance, and intrique!A sequel to "The Bride Price" which is a fabulous first book. You needn't read it before "The Bride Found" although you will find that they do build on each other in such a way that the second book is like picking up some old friends whose stories you wish to continue. There are some books written in sequel that you find if you read them too quickly one after the other, you lose something and they become too predictable. This book does not fall into that category, if you read the firat and then pick this one up, you are just as interested in finding out what happens to the characters! Although the characters of the first book are present, this book introduces more and adds to the mix.The book ended in such a place that I wanted to know more about the people of the story, setting me up to want the third book in the series. I thought at first, how could she end the book here, and then after I thought about it, of course she ended the book here, the perfect spot!Although the characters are stuck in 1863, they share quite a bit of modern humor, lost on those that have lived only in that era. Quite a bit of explaining!Pick this book up, but do yourself a favor and buy the set, you won't go wrong! I haven't read the third book in the series so can't speak of it but can only imagine that the author did herself proud with the third. Here is the description from the back of the book:Emma Wellington is dealing with the strange disappearance of her sister and brother-in-law, and no one is certain they’re even still alive. Saddled with their home drowning in probate, she is forced to take over the settling of their estate. As she is standing in her sister’s library, possibly for the last time, she sees a strange vision and then her world goes black. She awakens to find herself in an old-fashioned carriage house, facing a man in top hat and tails.Clayton Madden is in Lincoln’s War Cabinet and after arriving home one evening, discovers a beautiful woman in the shadows of his carriage house. He is immediately enamored with the tall beauty, despite her strange speech and dress. His intention is to get to know her further, but she disappears in the middle of the night with no explanation as to where she’s gone. Will he find her before a deeper plot threatens her life? Will Clayton and Emma find a love that is everlasting? less
