review 1: “Other wolves might’ve lunched on little forest critters: chipmunks, bunnies, squirrels. But I’m a vegetarian. That’s right: I don’t eat meat. Well, I try not to.”Honestly, Red Riding Hood Was Rotten! is a charming retelling of Little Red Riding Hood told from Wolf’s perspective. Wolf LOVES apples but he hasn’t eaten in weeks and the harvest was a long time off. All of a sudden, he gets a whiff of a girl that looks as plump and juicy as a big, sweet apple. What’s a hungry wolf to do?The illustrations were digitally created by Gerald Guerlais. His style is modern and mostly used hues of brown, green, red, and black in full-color images throughout the story.I found this story to be particularly cute. The text was simple and I loved the illustrations... more- especially the ones in the beginning of the story that contained all of the deep greens, reds, and blacks when Wolf and Red are talking in the forest. I also loved all of the references to apples throughout the story. In reading this book, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Jon Scieszka’s book The True Story of the Three Little Pigs as both are told from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf. As a teacher, this book lends itself nicely to 3rd and 4th grade ELA curriculum when students are expected to create their own retelling of a familiar fairy tale from another character’s perspective. It also makes for a great lesson that there are always two sides to every story. Also worth mentioning, this book belongs to a new series by Capstone Publishers called The Other Side of the Story series- I just might have to check out a few of these other fractured tales.
review 2: This untraditional version of LIttle Red Riding Hood is told by the big bad wolf, instead of the traditional narrator focusing on Little Red Riding Hood. The wolf is trying to convince the reader that he had good reason to eat Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother. Overall it's a fun and unique version of the traditional story. As a teaching tool, I like how it shows different character perspectives. I think it would be great to read the original version and then compare and contrast it with this version of the story. I would recommend this book to younger students as a read aloud and possibly older students when studying character perspective. less
