review 1: This version of Cinderella is told from the stepmother’s point of view. She tells that Cinderella is a constant storyteller and she has a very vivid imagination, making them up. As the stepmother puts it, she would not allow Cinderella to go to the ball because she lost her voice from telling so many stories. Cinderella managed to go to the ball with the help of the fairy godmother, danced with the Prince all night, and lost her glass slipper as she was leaving. The Prince came by the home and Cinderella asked if she could try on the slipper. It fit and she and the Prince lived happily ever after. At the end of the story, the stepmother said,”Poor man. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. But we lived happily ever after!”Activities:1-Read a classi... morec version of Cinderella. Now look at the stepmother’s version of the story. List some things that happened in the classic version that didn’t happen in the stepmother’s version. Then list some things that happened in the stepmother’s version that didn’t happen in the classic version. How are the two stories different? How are they the same? Use technology and create a Comparison/Contrast chart to insert your findings. Which version did you like better? Why?2-The end of the story could lend itself to different interpretations. Did the stepmother say that “we lived happily ever after!” because she and her daughters lived in the castle? Or, did she and her daughters live happily ever after because they were free from Cinderella and her storytelling. Write a next chapter to this story. What happened after Cinderella and the Prince married?
review 2: This is the story of Cinderella both told through the eyes of the Stepmother. It is an interesting take on the story with lots of humor incorporated into it. The Stepmother tries to make herself out to be so helpful and not as evil as the original story makes her out to be. For example, the night of the ball Cinderella was actually sick and she was just trying to keep her home in order for her to stay well. It is a simply sillier version of the story. I use this book in my classroom as an example of point of view. Everyone knows the story of the original Cinderella but it is also interesting to hear a different point of view. The students love it! The illustrations are great too. The facial expressions of the characters are really quite funny. We do a large fairy tale unit every year where this story can fit nicely into. The author, Trisha Speed Shaskan, also has other fairy tale stories told from other character's points of view like Little Red Riding Hood,Goldilocks, and Jack and the Beanstalk. These stories would all work nicely for fairy tales or point of view lessons. Very classroom friendly! less
