review 1: I normally love all of Troy Denning's Forgotten Realms books, but not this time. I didn't enjoy the characters or the plot. There was something for me about the characters that didn't seem authentic and I never could in my mind see this group working together for any reason. The plot was the same old tired "let's stop Shar from taking over the world", and I think that by this 5th book in the series, I would have enjoyed a different spin on "The Sundering" plotline. I would only recommend reading this if you would like to complete the series, otherwise feel free to skip it. Not really worth my time.
review 2: I wanted to like this book. I wanted to enjoy the story and forget that I have not liked anything I've previously read by this author. Sadly, this bo
... moreok proved time and again why I do not like the author's books or writing style. I would argue that the author "mailed it in" on this one if I didn't feel that every previous book I've read by him was just as poorly written. The plot is a bit thin - 4 people trying to take a gem to a mysterious temple in an effort to save the world - but it was workable. The problem being that the reader is bounced between points of view, the motivations of two of the characters are obviously suspect, the twists can be detected by the reader long before they happen, and it's clear the author is unsure of who the audience is supposed to be - is this an adult fantasy, juvenile or young adult? With a few exceptions, the Sentinel may have worked as an adult Forgotten Realms book, but the subplot between the 2 female characters reads more like a pre-teens idea of a "love" story. In addition, it feels like a collection of scenes that if properly fleshed out would have told an interesting tale. Unfortunately, it just falls flat and leaves the reader wondering what happened and if it was important to the Sundering's greater storyline. In the end, the Sentinel reads like an early Weis/Hickman Dragonlance novel - the game that spawned the story was probably a lot more fun for the players as it was going on and does not adapt well to story telling. less

Very fast-paced. Maybe not the strongest characterization in the world, but I enjoyed it.
