review 1: Ladieeeeeees. \o/ The women of this manga are great, why do we even spend time with other people. Kaya the friend making machine! The secret adorable squishy center of Miss Aoki! The steely idealistic moral core to Azuki! Iwase's inability to talk to a dude she likes without coming off really rude and judgemental ahahahaha, oh my gosh, that entire scene of Miss Aoki translating for her was gold. What an excellent way to kick off the volume. It's a good thing the ladies were so rad because dang, there were some high levels of douchery coming from dudes this volume. Holy shit Nawai you gross loser, leave, why are you still a thing. I'll only work with you if you go out with me?!?! Miss Aoki should've slapped him harder ugh. (Speaking of which, wow that was a weirdly drawn sce... morene. I'm pretty sure hands can't bend like that) Also that disgusting perv Ishizawa can gtfo. The entire concept of the panty shot storyline is skeezy as all hell, dudes don't need to be making it worse. Thank god for Fukuda to the rescue. (I totally ship it btw)There was lots of romantic doofery this volume and it was kind of enjoyable! In the way where I'm inspired to lecture our leads for their poor choices. I always knew Akito was way dumber than he realizes he is but this just cemented it. Son you don't ask your girlfriend to marry you to end an argument and because you're feeling attracted to another girl. That is a recipe for disaster right there. Idk how its going to play out, not quite sure what levels of realism Ohba and Obata are aiming for here. Slim to none would be my guess if we're still meant to take Azuki and Mashiro as a serious thing. Honestly the only thing saving that storyline is how adorable I find Kaya and Akito's investment in their continuing coupledom. Other things: I'm super into the idea of Iwase and Nizuma collaborating, their interactions have hilarious potential. Nizuma's weirdo enthusiastic manga stanning alongside Iwase's spiky determination to master manga writing! She's going to have no idea what to do with him, it'll be great. And the newly developed Kaya, Aoki, and Azuki friendship is the best thing, I hope there are many scenes of them interacting in future volumes. I have really minimal interest in the manga creation/editorial plotline right now but that's okay, judging by everything else Obata and Ohba focused on I'm getting the impression they don't care either. 3.5 stars
review 2: This series is very different, in some ways, to your typical shounen manga. It has many classical themes, such as competition between a field, only substituting the world of Jump authors and editors for the athletes or gamers that usually populate such series. However, I have never read another series (especially one published in Jump itself) like Bakuman. I keep wondering about the name "Bakuman." So far there have been no hints to the identity, purpose or meaning of Bakuman, but another of Ohba's work, Death Note, also had many hidden meanings and puns included in the story, so I'm assuming the title is something like that.Again, Obata's art really fits this story style and Ohba's characters.Although in the last two volumes I felt that the series was starting to go into a bit of a lull, this volume really turns it around, bring the suspense back into focus. When we're first introduced to Hattori (Ashirogi's first editor) I thought he was just a boring filler character, but Ohba has really developed most of the characters in the series so that readers are hard pressed to deny any of them as just background. In this volume Hattori again comes to the forefront proving once again why he is a character to watch. It also is fairly sweet, almost like a Diana Wynne Jones story with everyone getting married to their sweethearts.Although this is a teen series, I would recommend it to any age level, esp. if there is interest in art or publishing. For a series without any supernatural elements or battles it is very exciting and quite a page-turner. less
