review 1: Dan is a small town cop who enjoys the peace and quiet of his town-until the night when things go mad. It starts with the local drunk attacking a cop when spending a night in jail. Now the whole community seems to be infected, killing and eating each other and Dan has to save himself and his family. This is not a typical zombie book as the people are not traditional corpse style zombies. They are people who became suddenly contaminated and start trying to kill everyone around them. What I liked about this story is that the contamination was planned. I won't spoil the story by telling you any more but it was a nice twist. I liked the way that Howard's story was developed in particular. The story follows Dan, Howard the bitten officer, and Dan's daughter who is missing in the ... moredark neighbourhood. I liked the way that we switch between them as it keeps the tension up. There is a lot of action and sneaking around in the dark scenes which I enjoy in this kind of book. The author does a good job of telling the story and it was an enjoyable adventure, if not a classic.I might investigate this series further in the future.
review 2: I bought this story as part of A Taste of Tomorrow. The beginning of this story left a bit to be desired; I couldn't relate or like any of the characters as they were often referred to as "the man" or "the officer" and I had to actively think about which one was being referred to as there was usually at least 2 people in the scene that fit that description. The second part of the book, things got a bit more cohesive, and I finally started to care about the characters in the third part of the book. The story does an okay job getting me interested in the actual series, and since the boxed set (at the time I write this) is on sale for 99 cents and includes the next 3 books it did a good enough job for me to pick up a copy and continue the series at some point in the not too distant future. Hopefully the series itself will deliver and I'll be interested in finishing it. less

Loved the idea for this book....not everyone affected like a flesh eating zombie, more maniacal.
