review 1: I kind of want to give this more like 3.5 stars because I was stuck between liking it and really liking it. I didn't love the name'Kron' but the character was interesting enough and there's always something cool about an archer. I think that Adara has the potential to be interesting in the next book assuming the reader gets to find out more about her. So far she's a little bit one dimensional and her parts of the story felt a little bit rushed. I also liked Randall and Markwood - to be honest there wasn't really a character I didn't like. The plot moves along quickly - a little too quickly in places in fact! The plot is also fairly simple which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in places I did wonder what age group the book was aimed at - was it for older teens or adults?... more Having said that the violence would suggest adults. I guess I maybe wanted a few more plot twists - the only thing that surprised me was that Wyck died. My only other small criticism is that the show down with Belgad wasn't that much of a showdown - Kron throws a grenade and we last hear of Belgad trying to escape from the flames. He may not even be dead although Kron seems very accepting of the fact that he is without checking bearing in mind he's waited 15 years to kill him! That struck me as being a bit out of character based on the rest of the book. It now seems that Belgad was a small fish anyway and it's all about stopping Verkain. I liked the characters enough to read the next book but I hope that the style of plot changes a bit - a few more twists and surprises would nice.
review 2: I get the feeling that this author has played a little too much "Final Fantasy". That said, the book was great but mostly unoriginal. Sometimes, though, lack of innovation can result in a charming read, which is what this was. You get the standard wizards and warriors type of setting, with characters mostly what you'd expect. But to agree with another reviewer, those characters don't seem to fit into typical roles--and that makes the book all the more interesting. In fact you might go so far as to say that the roles of the protagonist and antagonist have been completely reversed. The main character, Krom, seems pretty much hell-bent on taking one guy down, and although that guy is clearly morally reprehensible...Well, so is Krom. By the end of the book, his quest comes full circle (you'll know what I mean when you finish). This book is for the most part written well, but there are a few bits of dialog scattered about which are written the way they might be said, but not written the way you want to read them. Sometimes it can be a bit annoying, but at least it's realistic. Sometimes the diction seems like it could have been better polished before the book's release. Most notably are a few spelling or formatting errors (very minor, but still one will most likely notice them before finishing). The best part of this book, hands down, is the story. Like I said, it comes full circle in a way, and I love books in which the beginning parallels the ending. Ty clearly outlined exactly what and how he wanted events to take place, and very rarely do events feel like they are disjointed or unnecessary. Ultimately, a good read. I'll be sure to pick up the next installment once I have a couple bucks. less
