review 1: I was lucky to be on a long train ride as I found this book very hard to put down. I am not a cycling buff myself but married to one, and we had Armstrong's It's Not About The Bike on our shelf for many years. This book benefits from the co-author's journalistic experience in weaving facts and interviews into a cohesive narrative. It does something that I think all great books do -- highlights how almost every one of us are likely to have made the same choices as our fellow human beings if we were in their circumstances. It is also a cautionary tale about letting anyone in any field or part of our life get away with intimidating behaviour - ultimately, we lose, so cut losses early and get away from them. Still stunned by how blatantly riders lied to the public - but no... morew I understand why they did. That said, after reading this book, I hope I will remember to let facts speak for themselves and take denials with a grain of salt - be they from politicians, sportspeople, business leaders ... Or Anyone who has a lot to lose. There is an interesting sub story in this book about women as enablers ... Or whistle blowers.
review 2: It's so easy to judge the dopers, and this excellent book brings us right into the world of competitive cycling. The sponsors who want an immediate return on their money. The UCI who turns a blind eye to any doping, and who also seem eager to take "donations". The cyclists themselves: they spend their lives trying to get to the Tour de France and now, what? They should watch their competitors fly past them on their way to victory, while they - non dopers - come in 40th, 50th place, in front of the world, their friends, families, coaches, etc? I am not endorsing doping in any sport, but the authors were able to portray the whole picture and I certainly was able to empathize. A must-read. less
