review 1: I liked this novel. It was a good story and was well written (as I've found all of Ursula Hegi's books to be). I love that she writes about characters who were introduced in previous books, but whose stories weren't developed. While this story was compelling and familiar (it is set in the same small town in Germany where "Stones From the River" was set), it felt a little "unfinished" to me. I wasn't ready for it to end when it did, and I was left feeling like I needed to know more of the story in order to feel fully satisfied. Still, a great book that I would definitely recommend!
review 2: Yeah, yeah, we all liked 'Stones from the River' better, and it's because 'Stones' gave us a more likable heroine, with more in-depth exploration of her life, while 'Ch
... moreildren and Fire' reads more like an ensemble piece. What's nice about Ms Hegi's Germans is that rarely are they all good, or all bad, and she makes it easy to sympathize with their travails once she pulls back the curtains on their individual lives. A well-written easy read, it imagines - easily and credibly - how easy it was for good people to do nothing in Hitler's early days. less

Meh. It was okay. A quicker read than Stones from the River. But I liked that book better.

3.5 starsAll the flipping back and forth between present and past was a bit distracting.

I want to like her books, but it's not happening. Bummer.
