review 1: Surprisingly, very informative. I found the sections on race and ethnicity to be among the more fascinating aspects of the book. She makes as strong argument, via genetics and textual references, for Katniss being biracial, as well as Prim being the product of adultery. Some astute socio-political interpretations as well. The author shows that the Panem we see in the triology is not so much a product of a paranoid fear of a government with too much power, but is instead a frightingly logical extension of the world we have now: a welfare system designed to punish the poor: the tesserae; a capitol that rules without the consent of the governed; and an entertainment system designed to marginalizet he citizens who produce the goods of the society. Looking forward to more... more books by this author.
review 2: it was a fun read if you like THG and fandom meta. They are written like all those meta analysis essays that I've seen for other shows like Firefly and Battlestar Galactica and Lost, etc., so they're footnoted and referenced and use the conventions of academic journal articles. But really, unless you're obsessed with the world of The Hunger Games, you're probably not going to find this thought-provoking reading. I didn't buy or agree with everything Arrow said, but that is the point of academic writing, to inspire discussion; and that is definitely the style Arrow is going for - academic writing. less
