review 1: For fans of this series, this is a critical book. I'm not a fan. My reaction is odd in that most of the book is good. Every so often McDermid will throw in a line or paragraph that irritates me enough that I want to close the book. Granted, most of these are personal preferences. I did force myself to finish the book because I was hoping she'd change direction and pacify me. Didn't happen. Refer to Poe's raven for final commentary.
review 2: The pages undeniably turn, and the characters' needs drive the plot in a way which I would call satisfying if it wasn't for all the violence. I now realise that everyone else buying this book was already expecting detailed description of beatings and torture of women by men, not just once but dropped periodically thro... moreughout, so complaining about that would be like complaining about sadistic violence in Nordic Noir. But I do. less
