review 2: Skillfully plotted, complicated collage of a dual narrative and two seemingly unrelated cold cases. But what is most interesting are the social issues not usually present in other suspense novels: the desperate cruelty of the coal strikes decades ago, the resulting shattered lives and communities, the underlying class system that still exists in Britain and the role of the police when it comes to solving current and cold cases.McDermid's style is smoothly readable, entertaining from beginning to end. less
