review 1: Still Dirty/Low Down & Dirty ReviewLow Down and dirty is the forth book in the Dirty Red series. Red thought her days on the run were behind her. She bought a new house and Arizona from her real estate checks and was leading a low key lifestyle. She double crossed everybody and thought that she had left no loose ends in Detroit until Catfish came banging on her door, ready for revenge. Red is a professional con artist and uses ethos, pathos, or logos in almost all her conversations. Red has been called a "con artist" and a "master manipulator" when it comes to getting what she wants. An example for logos Red convinces Catfish not to kill her by convincing him that she has a big movie deal coming through since she is his an "author" He believes her because it is logical to ... morethink that she has a movie deal coming through since her books were best sellers. Red even says "I'm already a bestselling author, it's not a stretch to think i have a movie deal," (Low Down & Dirty, pg.25)Red appeals to pathos because she uses the love others have for her to her advantage. She knew Bacon had a soft spot for her so she used that for her purposes. She acted like she was in love with him and told her about her tough childhood so that he would let her out the house more and trust her. Red carefully planned it saying "All I have to do is give this n---- some waterworks and I'll be out this house in no time," (Still Dirty,pg. 56) The whole time she was also sleeping with the police officer and saying Bacon was beating her so that he would feel bad for her. She needed the detective to remove her as a suspect from a murder she committed and to help her set up Bacon. After he helped her she framed him for rape. Red appeals to ethos when she goes to Mexico and has to prove that she "down" with the illegal things they had going on. Most people don't know Red is Puerto Rican because her skin is darker because her dad was black. The woman who was giving her money was skeptical of her Red started speaking Spanish and the woman trusted her. Red also said she was Costa Rican instead of Puerto Rican because "the prejudices aren't as deep with the Costa Ricans and Mexicans," (Low Down & Dirty pg. 100).Red is an accomplished con artist and manipulator. She uses whoever she has to to get what she wants. She manipulated trained hired hit men to kill her respected step father in cold blood. Red appeals to logos, paathos, and ethos in every situation.
review 2: Sometimes when you pick up a book that's a part of a series, it doesn't matter if you missed a book or two somewhere in the middle because the author provides enough information to drive a story on its own. However, with this one, it turned out, for me, that missing a book (or two) made a big difference. I was lost at the characters' motivation for some of the things that they did, and not enough information was provided for me to sympathize or empathize with any of the characters. I don't feel like I really got to know any of them. However, the story was fast-paced and an easy read. less
